What’s the Difference Between All These Injectables Anyway?

Injectables, such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers, can work all sorts of magic when it comes to battling the signs of aging. They can plump up lips, smooth fine lines and wrinkles and even enhance cheekbones. But what’s the difference between all these different injectables and what do they really do? How do you know which one is right for you?

BOTOX Injections

BOTOX injections are a very popular treatment option designed to target wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements, such as deep creases on the forehead and those lines between your eyebrows.

BOTOX takes just a few minutes to inject and temporarily reduces the activity of your facial muscles. This helps smooth the surface of your skin and reduces the appearance of those wrinkles, giving you a more youthful look. BOTOX injections can last for 3 to 4 months before needing a touchup.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are different and instead of halting muscle activity like BOTOX, they are all about adding volume. There are many different types of dermal fillers and they can contain hyaluronic acid or synthetic polymers. The best one for you depends on your cosmetic needs and what your aesthetician recommends.

One of the most common and popular dermal fillers used today is JUVÉDERM®. JUVÉDERM is a collection of different hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that target a variety of different cosmetic concerns. It is made from hyaluronic acid, something that is found naturally in your skin. As you age, hyaluronic acid production declines, so JUVÉDERM helps replenish those levels as well. Another benefit of JUVÉDERM is its long-term results, with most injections lasting up to 6 to 12 months.

Sculptra, known as a liquid facelift, is a microsphere injectable and works slightly different. This material irritates the skin which, in turn, increases collagen levels and thickness in the area. The main benefit of this treatment is its long-term results, which can last as much as 2 years.

How Do You Know What’s Right for You?

With all these different types of dermal fillers and BOTOX, how do you know what is right for you? The first step is to meet with an experienced board-certified provider and discuss your cosmetic goals. They will help you decide which injectables will best meet your needs.
