Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

There’s a reason many hail microneedling, a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin’s surface, as a miracle treatment. At Wellskin Med Spa in Dallas, TX, we use it to address a number of different skin concerns. A good candidate for this treatment is someone who is seeking to improve the appearance and texture of their skin. Here are some of the factors that make someone a suitable candidate.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Skin Texture and Tone Concerns

This treatment is often used to treat issues such as acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities. If you have any of these concerns, this may be a good treatment option for you.

Generally Healthy Skin

Candidates should have overall healthy skin with no active infections, open wounds, or severe skin conditions in the treatment area. When you consult with us we will be able to tell you whether your skin is suitable, and suggest alternative treatments or put your treatment on hold until any active issues are resolved.

Realistic Expectations

It’s essential that candidates have realistic expectations about the results they may see. While this treatment can produce noticeable improvements, it may require multiple sessions to achieve desired outcomes. This is especially true if you have deep acne scarring or significant wrinkles.

Fitzpatrick Skin Types

This treatment is suitable for a wide range of skin types, but the approach and settings may need to be adjusted based on your skin type. If you have a darker complexion we may recommend fewer sessions and shallower needles to ensure that no hyperpigmentation results from your treatment.

Sun Protection

Adequate sun protection is important before and after treatment, as the sun can cause even more damage than usual when your skin is recovering from its “micro-wounds.” Candidates should be willing to use sunscreen and take precautions to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful effects.

Health History

Before treatment, you’ll meet with one of our qualified skincare professionals for a consultation. Here you’ll have an opportunity to discuss your goals. You should also disclose your complete medical history, including any medical conditions, medications, or recent treatments, to ensure microneedling is safe for you. Many medications will have no bearing on your suitability for treatment, but some can, so it’s important to be honest. If you have allergies or sensitivities to certain skincare products or materials, this will also be important to disclose so we can make sure that there are no potential complications.

Not Pregnant or Breastfeeding

This treatment is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals due to the lack of safety data in these cases. If you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding we’ll recommend that you put off this treatment until a later time, or select another of our treatments for the time being, such as a relaxing facial to help you look and feel your best.

Special Considerations

While this treatment is generally safe for many individuals, there are certain cases where caution is necessary. Those with a history of keloid scarring, active skin infections, or a tendency to hyperpigmentation may not be ideal candidates for microneedling. A thorough consultation with a qualified professional can help identify any potential issues.

Why Does It Work?

Collagen is what makes our skin flexible and bouncy. When we are young our body prioritizes the production of collagen, but as we age this production slows down. The lack of collagen causes our skin to wrinkle and look less glowy.
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates tiny wounds in the skin. These “micro-wounds” force the body to prioritize the production of collagen in the skin, returning some of its glow and elasticity. This collagen induction can also be used to address issues such as stretch marks, scarring, pigmentation irregularities, and even conditions like melasma.

Recommended Frequency

The number of microneedling sessions needed can vary depending on the severity of the skin issue and the desired results. While some people may see improvements after just one session, it’s common to require a series of treatments, typically spaced a few weeks apart. The incremental approach allows the skin to heal and regenerate between sessions, leading to gradual but significant changes in skin texture and appearance.

Combination Therapies

Microneedling can be used in combination with other skincare procedures for enhanced results. In order to maintain your results long-term we may recommend combining treatment with the Clear + Brilliant laser rejuvenation, or alternating with BOTOX in order to address different but complementary aesthetic concerns. Other combinations include using serums or topical treatments after the treatment session to target specific skin concerns.

Devices and Safety

Microneedling devices can vary in terms of their needle length and technology. Some derma-rollers are designed for at-home use, while others are available for professional use in clinics or medical offices. We use the state-of-the-art SkinPen device, which is able to effectively address a wide range of concerns and skincare goals. You can also be assured that our staff are qualified experts and will adhere to the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Recovery Time

After treatment, there is typically some downtime involved, but you won’t need to take any time off work. Patients may experience redness, for a few days after treatment, but this is a natural part of the process and dissipates quickly. It’s important to follow post-treatment care instructions; these include avoiding certain skincare products, sun exposure, and vigorous exercise for a specified period. It’s also essential to keep the treated area clean and moisturized during the healing process.
