What’s the Best Age To Get Botox?

When we notice the signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines, they can make us feel insecure. This is especially true if our wrinkles are forming early in life, making us look older than we feel. While we will all develop these wrinkles at some point, it’s possible to minimize them and even prevent them for quite some time with Botox treatment. At WellSkin Med Spa in Dallas, TX, we helped many patients reach their goals through this effective therapy.

Many people are surprised to find that, even if they don’t currently have wrinkles, this therapy is very effective as a preventative. Whether you are in your mid-20s and would like your smooth skin that lasts another decade at least, or you’re already older but want to prevent new wrinkles from forming as well as treat the wrinkles you already have, this treatment can help. It’s suitable for anyone from 18 to 65.

What’s the Best Age To Get Botox?

Some people like to start Botox treatments very early in life, while other people prefer to wait until they have visible lines and wrinkles to get started. This treatment is both preventative and corrective, making it suitable for anyone, at any age. The only real question is whether it’s the best treatment for your aesthetic goals. If you plan to get this treatment to prevent wrinkles, regularly scheduled treatments about three months apart are right for most people.

If you prefer to seek treatment only to correct wrinkles that have already formed, which even more people do, not only can you expect to see your existing wrinkles softened, but, over time, you will also notice a preventative effect. You’ll be able to treat the wrinkles are already seeing while preventing new ones from forming. If your primary goal is treatment rather than prevention, you will probably want treatment every three to four months.

It’s also worth noting that, for many people, getting repeat treatments means that, eventually, you can wait longer and longer between treatments.

How Does Botox Work?

Many of our wrinkles form because of muscle movement in our faces. When we are young, we notice wrinkles and lines when we make particular expressions, such as a smile, but as soon as we stop smiling, these lines smooth back out. That’s because our skin is resilient and full of collagen and elastin. Over time, our bodies’ production of collagen and elastin drops, and those movements that we’ve been making over and over again for a lifetime begin to become permanent lines and wrinkles.

The muscles of our faces move because our nerves tell them to do so via messenger chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Botox is a neurotoxin, meaning that it destroys those transmitters so they can’t signal to your muscles to make the movement. By precisely injecting this neurotoxin into just the right areas of the face, we are able to paralyze the muscles that are causing you to form lines and wrinkles while leaving the rest of your muscles untouched so you can make perfectly natural expressions.

This effect of neurotoxin treatment is temporary, which means you do need regular appointments in order to keep up your results. However, many people love the fact that this treatment is temporary. Unlike a plastic surgery procedure, which is permanent, you can choose your look with Botox. If you like the way it looks with your wrinkles smoothed out, you can continue treatment. If you prefer fewer wrinkles to be treated, or more, it’s a simple matter to make an adjustment.

It’s also important to know that this treatment stimulates the body to produce more collagen. Collagen gives skin its foundational strength, so having more of this will improve your skin in multiple ways, even as your neurotoxin treatment paralyzes wrinkle-creating muscles.

What Can Be Treated?

This is an FDA-approved treatment, and the FDA has approved it specifically to treat certain things in particular, including:

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the lines that form around the outside of our eyes. For most of us, they begin to appear in our early 20s as we smile, but quickly disappear when we stop smiling. By our late 20s or early 30s, these lines start to become permanent.

Frown Lines

Frown lines are fairly self-explanatory: these are the lines that look like the number 11 and that appear between the eyebrows when we frown or concentrate. Again, these are usually first noticed in our early 20s but start to become permanent in our 30s or so.

Forehead Lines

These lines are also commonly called worry lines. These are the lines that run back and forth across the forehead, and they are often the first lines that we notice. They form when we are worried, raise our eyebrows, or concentrate hard. Because the muscles that control these lines are very strong, they tend to be more significant lines.

This treatment can be used for other things other than the issues listed above, however, these are the most common problems that this neurotoxin treatment can address. Come talk to us about your concerns so that we can explain all that Botox can do for you.

About Treatment

Meeting With Us

The first step is to meet with us for a consultation. We’ll look at your medical history, examine your skin and the wrinkles you’re worried about, listen to your goals and concerns, and help you decide if this is the best treatment for your needs. This consultation is typically very short and there are very few things that could preclude you from having treatment almost immediately.

Treatment

If you would like to have a numbing cream applied, we will do that first, though most people don’t find the thin needles painful. Then we will use extremely fine needles to inject tiny amounts of this Botox treatment precisely into those facial muscles that are causing your wrinkles. The number of injections you need will depend on which muscles you’re having treated, the extent of your wrinkling concerns, and even the texture of your skin. Rest assured that are skilled and experienced practitioners will precisely target your treatment so that you can make natural expressions.

Aftercare

You do not need to plan for any downtime after this treatment. You can return to your normal life and schedule immediately afterward with just a few minor precautions that will help you see the best results as quickly as possible. First, be sure to avoid drinking alcohol for a day after treatment. Alcohol can cause you to develop bruising and may even make the therapy less effective. After 24 hours, you can enjoy a drink as normal. Also during the first 24 hours, you should avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging anywhere near the treatment area. Doing so could move the product out of the intended area and into other spots where you don’t want treatment.

You also want to protect your skin from excessive heat and from the sun during this first day. If you go to the sauna, engage in vigorous exercise, or spend time sunbathing, your body will increase circulation, leading to less than optimal results.

When Will I See Results, and How Long Will They Last?

It typically takes about one to two weeks for you to see your final results, though many people notice initial results within a couple of days. It depends on the size of the muscle that is being treated, how quickly your body metabolizes, your age, and other factors of your general physiology. Most people enjoy their results for about three or four months, though if you have been seeking treatment regularly, you may notice that you only need treatment every five to six months. There are some things you can do to extend your results:

Stay Out of the Sun

Spending too much time in the sun can damage your skin, cause your body to become lower in collagen, and will, overall, weaken the effectiveness of your treatment.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking is extremely destructive to the skin. It interferes with collagen production, reduces the elasticity and resilience of our skin, and makes lines and wrinkles more prominent. If you smoke, you’re actively working against your treatment and can expect your results to fade more quickly.

Stay Hydrated

The better hydrated you are, the longer you can expect your results to last and the more effective you can expect them to be. Hydrated skin is more supple, has better cellular turnover, and has better collagen and elastin production. Hydration is good for you in every way, so try to get at least eight glasses of water a day and eat plenty of hydrating foods, like fruit and vegetables.
