Is Hitting the Gym Killing Your Complexion?

Workout routines can deliver a long list of positive results, including enhanced self-image, well-deserved mood boost and a toned, fit body. However there’s also a list of undesirable side effects that workouts cause. Freckles, age spots and blemishes can all result from your exercise regimen, but the good news is they can be remedied.

Freckles Aren’t Always Cute

People who regularly participate in outdoor sports and activities are prone to developing freckles and age spots. These skin discolorations predominantly appear on the face but can occur on any part of the body regularly exposed to the sun. With increased sun exposure, freckles become darker and more visible. This is because the UVB radiation of the sun’s rays causes skin cells to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives freckles their color.
Age spots often occur in clusters and are a darker pigment than the rest of the complexion, and tend to develop as we age. They result from a combination of factors including genetics, however, prolonged sun exposure is certainly a contributing cause.

Workouts that Cause Breakouts

Exercise and sweat go hand in hand. Working up a sweat is often the sign of a good workout, but it can lead to unwanted blemishes. A quick post-workout shower can help, but may not be enough to keep workout-related breakouts at bay.
